Pro tip:Plan around your menstrual cycle before booking travel dates if possible. Women cannot perform Tawaf or Sa'i during menstruation or postnatal bleeding - though you may still enter the masjid and make dua. ORS / electrolyte sachets are the item most women forget - pack them from home. Skip bulky biscuits and snacks; Bin Dawood (including inside Abraj Al Bait) stocks everything you need. In summer heat, schedule Tawaf and Sa'i after Maghrib or before Fajr and avoid outdoor walking between about 10 am and 3 pm. Speak with a knowledgeable scholar about your options if your cycle coincides with your trip.

What's included in this checklist

This umrah checklist for women is structured across 8 sections - giving you clear priorities at each stage without being overwhelmed by a single massive list. Here's what each section covers:

Planning & Booking

Start here 4-8 weeks before travel. Consider your travel dates carefully and confirm Mahram requirements if applicable to your visa. Hotels inside Abraj Al Bait (Fairmont, Swissotel) are walking distance to the Haram; Aziziyah options are cheaper but rely on shuttle buses - confirm frequency before booking.

  • Book Umrah package or arrange flights and hotels independently (Important)
  • Apply for Umrah visa through authorised agent or official channels (Important)
  • Confirm Mahram travel requirements for your visa type (Important)
  • Prefer hotels inside or beside Abraj Al Bait for direct walking access (no shuttle) (Important)
  • If budgeting for Aziziyah or shuttle hotels, confirm transfer frequency to the Haram
  • Plan travel dates around menstrual cycle if possible
  • Arrange airport transfers and transport between Makkah and Madinah
  • Purchase travel insurance covering Saudi Arabia
  • Inform employer and arrange leave dates

Documents & Finances

Keep originals and copies of every document. Store digital backups in cloud storage accessible without roaming data.

  • Valid passport (6+ months validity from travel date) (Important)
  • Umrah visa and entry permit (Important)
  • Mahram relationship proof if required by visa (marriage or birth certificate)
  • Vaccination certificates (meningitis ACWY and any current requirements) (Important)
  • Flight tickets - printed and saved offline

  • Emergency contact list - written down, not only on phone
  • Copies of all documents - physical and digital backup

Ihram Attire & Modest Clothing

Women enter Ihram in regular modest clothing - not the white sheets worn by men. Pack loose cotton or linen abayas in light colours; most pilgrims bring one per day, or three to four if doing laundry. Wear leggings underneath - you will walk long distances on marble floors in heat and crowds.

Frequently asked questions

Most pilgrims pack one abaya per day, or about three to four if you plan to do laundry - laundry services are available at hotels and you can hand-wash as well. A common rule is roughly one abaya for every 1-2 days. Choose cotton or linen in light colours for the heat. Always wear thin cotton capri leggings or trousers underneath to prevent chafing during long walks.
Keep it minimal: phone, cash in riyals, hotel name/card on paper, ORS sachets, tissues, unscented Vaseline, a small power bank, foldable prayer mat or muslin cloth, empty bottle for Zamzam, face masks, pocket dua booklet, snacks in ziplock bags, basic medicines, slippers, scissors for hair trimming, and a plastic bag for your shoes. A light drawstring bag helps hold several pairs of slippers during Tawaf. Quran and Zamzam are readily available at the Haram - no need to carry them from home.
Women do not wear the white Ihram sheets that men wear. Instead, women enter Ihram in their normal modest clothing - typically a loose abaya or jilbab with a hijab. The face may remain uncovered (though some scholars permit covering the face in crowded areas without the intention of niqab). Clothing must be loose, opaque, and free of adornment. Avoid perfume and scented products from the moment you make your intention at the Miqat.
Women cannot perform Tawaf or Sa'i during menstruation (hayd) or postnatal bleeding (nifas). If your period begins after you have entered Ihram but before completing the rituals, you must wait until you are pure before performing Tawaf and Sa'i. You remain in Ihram until the rituals are complete. Consult a trusted scholar before your trip for guidance specific to your situation, as rulings on entering the masjid and making dua during this time can vary.
While in Ihram, women must not: use perfume or scented products, wear niqab (face veil) or gloves (though covering the face with a loose cloth in crowds is permitted by many scholars), cut hair or nails, hunt, or engage in marital relations. Women may wear any modest stitched clothing, including coloured abayas, unlike men who wear only unstitched Ihram sheets.
Umrah for women follows the same four acts as for men: (1) Enter Ihram at the Miqat with intention and Talbiyah. (2) Perform Tawaf - seven circuits around the Kaaba (women do not perform Idtiba or Ramal). (3) Perform Sa'i - seven walks between Safa and Marwah (women may walk at their own pace). (4) Trim the hair - women cut a fingertip-length from their hair to exit Ihram. This template includes a dedicated rituals section to guide you through each step.
